MODULE 7 : ASSERTIVENESS SKILLS

Why assertiveness skills? :

Assertiveness is the ability to take a firm and on occasion, an unyielding stand, but not to lack humility and sensitivity to the needs and the position of the other person. The feelings and dignity of the other person are always taken into consideration, in order to maintain harmony. The assertive person is always polite, but firm.

It is never necessary to manipulate or be manipulated by others. Assertive behaviour enables you to avoid the pitfalls of aggressive behaviour and to prevent others from violating your rights or invading your space .

Advantages of assertiveness:

Assertiveness leads to:

  1. Healthy and meaningful relationships
  2. Less friction and conflict
  3. Increased self-respect and respect from others
  4. Enhanced self-esteem and a sense of being in control
  5. Increased productivity
  6. Less stress and a sense of well being
  7. Assertiveness is about expressing yourself appropriately and therefore it is never necessary to bear grudges or to suppress emotions. This counteracts the tendency to feel discouraged and especially depressed.
